Busy…
Sorry there hasn’t been many posts recently, got too soaked up in nice weather, but now the weathers gone. Had a bit of an eventful week in a good and a bad way as well, but now it’s time to get on with it and create some more things and even start looking at designing the summer line! 
INTERVIEW WITH TIDAL WARS
When I first started South City I really wanted to make sure it was a company that supported creativeness. One of the first band that popped to mind were Tidal Wars. These four lads are not only talented Musicians, they are hilarious as well. But they don’t just put effort in to their music, they put effort in to every single aspect of what they bring to the table.
Okay lets start at the beggining, how did the band start?
Jack: Me and Will starting writing some songs together and then asked Joe to drum for us. We played as a three piece for some time and then saw a sexy young man play guitar one night and decided to ask him if he wanted to make some noise for Tidal Wars.
Was that sexy man jake?
Jake: yes
Why did you want Jake? Whats so special about him?
Will: He had a cast on his arm, probably from fighting off women, yet that did not stop him from shredding like a son of a bitch. We were never going to not want him after that, were we?
Guess not!
Now tell me whats your process as a band for a song? I heard something about a den you made out of objects in your house to write lyrics in, like a lyric den! Is this true?
Jack: we did make a snuggle palace, yes
And did that snuggle palace make you better song writers or did it just turn into a buggery dungeon?
Joe: we did that one time… one time… it was nice. It was the first time we all wrote songs together. Before it was pretty much Will and Jack who were writing the stuff.
Will: Most of the time in the snuggle palace was devoted to playing Ps2, eating cheese and drinking wine.
That is amazing! Okay back to business is there a meaning/reason behind the name Tidal Wars?
Jack: Well, we had the name when is was still just me and will, and we wanted it to be somewhat relevant to us. We live in a seaside town so I wanted something kinda beachy and reminiscent of where we come from and also me and will used to play this game in school called “tribal wars”, so combine the two and hey presto “Tidal Wars”
Yeah because you live in the seaside town of Weston-super-Mare, So what do you think of the music scene there then?
Jake: Pretty shit. Not many decent venues to play. Not many good bands to play with. There isn’t really a music scene. Unless you like middle aged cover bands…
Jack: Or pop punk.
Joe: As a town it’s alright, but as Jake said there isn’t really a music scene.
As individuals what musician or band really inspires to play music?
Jack: For me theres a long list, but a few would be no age, les savy fav, the national, pavement, blur, sonic youth and loads more. I think they all balance noise and catchy melody well, but I also love that DIY ethic that most of these bands share.
Will: For me it’s a similar vibe to Mr Snelling. To name a few: The Flaming Lips, Pavement, Sonic Youth, Joy Division. I like a deep voice, loud drums and a fuzzy DIY aesthetic.
Jake: My bloody valentine, swervedriver and echo and bunnymen are my main three go to bands, big dreamy guitars are always a winner.
Joe: My biggest inspiration from a single musician has to be John Stanier of Battles, but band wise I’d have to say: Joy division, Editors, the national, the cure and R.E.M. I’m a sucker for a catchy melody when it comes down to it.
That makes a massive selection of bands, moving on from other bands, I hear you’re recording a new EP. How’s that going?
Will: Yes, you are well informed! We are releasing an EP in the next month or so called ‘Watersports’. It’ll have six songs on it and it will cost everyone 0p.
WHAT?! 0 pennies you guys like giving your stuff for free as you did with your first demo! Which brings me to my next question your by listening to a song like Veils then listening to a song like Curator you can tell your sound has changed. What sound are you trying to create with this new ep?
Will: Well, we like to see it as our sound has developed as opposed to have changed. And we hope our sound will develop with every song we write. We never really aim for a particular sound, we write things almost sub conciously and whatever comes out… just.. happens.
Jake: Some songs fit together better than others but that’s because we all bring material to the band, for example songs I bring to the band will sound different to a song will or Jack may write
Joe: Not to mention Curator was writing while we were a three piece without Jake, so obviously with him here now our newer songs have a sound thats way fuller.
And with these sweet developed songs on the new EP will there be some more of this awesome art work? Who does the art work?
Jack: Will does all the artwork, we are fortunate to have someone as good at creating artwork within the band already. I don’t think we ever really talked about who was going to do what, he just took the initiative and came up with these images, that worked with the music we were making
